Questions & Answers
WPC is the commonly used abbreviation for Wood Plastic Composite. In German, the term Holz-Verbundwerkstoff (wood composite material) is also used.
Depending on where the finished product will be used, different production processes are applied. The most common are extrusion and injection moulding. Wooden Tec decking boards are manufactured using the extrusion process. The Wooden Tec tile “NICI”, for example, is produced using the injection moulding process. No! Different manufacturers use different material compositions. As a result, the product properties can vary greatly. The higher the wood content in the WPC product, the more susceptible it is to weather conditions. Various types of plastics are also used — from PP, PE, and HDPE to PVC — almost everything is possible depending on the application. Recently, bio-based plastics are also being used for the production of composite materials.
The WPC product sector now includes more and more products. For example, car manufacturers already produce many interior components from WPC. In the household sector too, more and more items are being made from wood-plastic composites. Easily recognisable quality criteria for WPC products used outdoors and exposed to weather conditions are the following: Running metre weight: A higher running metre weight of the board means greater wall thickness of the product. More material has been processed per running metre. Wood content: A higher wood content means increased weathering. Colours fade and grey more strongly. Conclusion: A low running metre weight combined with a high wood content are clear signs of inferior quality. These criteria are also usually linked to a lack of warranty or only a one to two-year guarantee.
Wooden Tec decking boards consist of 58% pure wood, 30% HDPE, and 12% additives such as protection against fungi, mould and moss, insect protection, UV protection, and colour pigments.
No! All Wooden Tec products are free from toxic substances.
Wooden Tec products are generally extremely low-maintenance and do not require any special treatment such as oiling or painting, as is common with other wood products. The decking boards, privacy screens or façade panels should simply be cleaned from time to time with water and a brush. You can also use a pressure washer, keeping a distance of about 40 cm from the surface, with water that is not too hot and with moderate pressure.
WPC binds CO₂ permanently thanks to its wood content, since no rotting occurs. Ordinary wooden boards are subject to continuous decay due to environmental influences, which can only be slowed down with protective coatings — some of which are highly toxic. In addition, WPC is made using wood that would otherwise have no further use and would be burned or thermally disposed of, thus releasing the bound CO₂ back into the atmosphere.
